A Report On The E-C Translation Of Cooperation Agreement On Warehouse Project Music Event In People's Republic Of China

As an official legal document that determines the division of rights and obligations and sharing of profits and losses between both parties,the international business cooperation agreements have become increasingly important.As is signed between parties of different nationalities,it's necessary to translate the agreement to the language of the other party to reflect the principle of reciprocity.Therefore,the importance of translating the international business agreement is self-evident.The source text is a business agreement named Cooperation Agreement on Warehouse Project Music Event in People's Republic of China,which is divided into 17 articles,stipulating rights and obligations of both parties from the scope of cooperation,event details and information,finance and payment,media rights,limitation of liability and so on.The translation is guided by Peter Newmark's Semantic and Communicative Translation Theory.He emphasizes that “the translation should be as close as possible to the lexical and syntactic structure of the original” in semantic translation,while “the translator has the right to alter the original logic,words and errors” in communicative translation.Newmark's Semantic and Communicative Translation Theory is widely used in translation research and practice.The original language of the translation practice is English.From the lexical level,the translation of the vocabularies should be as close as possible to the lexical structure of the source text.In addition,the specific meaning of the vocabularies should be conveyed accurately.From the syntactic level,to better approximate the language habit of the target readers,the structure of the original sentence often needs to be adjusted during the translation process.Therefore,Newmark's Semantic and Communicative Translation theory can guide this translation practice.Based on the translation of the cooperation agreement,this paper summarizes the whole translation process under the guidance of Peter Newmark's Semantic and Communicative Translation Theory.First,there is a brief introduction to the translation project,including its background and significance.Then the translator gives an introduction to the translation process from three aspects: pre-translation,in-translation,and post-translation.Next,the features of the source text are analyzed from the perspective of lexicon and syntax.After that,the guiding theory is introduced from the following aspects: the development of Semantic and Communicative Translation Theory,the difference between the two translation approaches,and the feasibility of the theory to this translation report.The most important part is the case analysis,which discusses the translation of the business terms,synonym overlaps and modal verbs at the lexical level,and the translation of the long sentences,passive voices,and conditional adverbial clauses at the syntactic level.The last part is the conclusion.This report introduces the features of the business cooperation agreement from the lexical and syntactic level,analyzes the role of the guiding theory in selecting translation methods for various examples,summarizes different translation strategies used for sentences with different features.When translating the cooperation agreement,at the lexical level,the business terms can be translated by literal translation or conversion;synonym overlaps by literal translation or omission;modal verbs by literal translation.At the syntactic level,long sentences can be translated by addition,inversion,splitting and blending;passive voice by conversion;conditional adverbial clauses by inversion or addition.This practice report is expected to provide a useful reference for other translators who undertake the translation of the business cooperation agreements.
