Research On Public Arts's Intervening In Community Building

Community building of cities is closely related to the better life of their citizens and is also the central topic in creating better residential areas.Based on the requirements of overall protection of old downtowns and the special scale restrictions,Beijing shows obvious "micro-renewal" characteristics in its community building.As the protection of old downtowns plays an increasingly important role in the construction of Beijing as a cultural center city,the public art's intervention and better social functions are getting more and more attention.Art intervention is a specific type of community building currently,with good operability and without too many entry restrictions and conditions;and it is very conducive to cultural display and emotional expression and aligns with the current general direction of urban planning and development.The art intervention model has not only played an important role in Western countries' community building,but also played a remarkable role in the localized urban community building in China.This study summarizes the characteristics of the art intervention in communities,including public participation,community rooting,locality focus and strengthened awareness.And it generalizes three practical advantages of art intervention in community building: facilitate participation,communication and information transmission;showcase a certain symbolic effect;and brings a sense of identity and belonging to residents.Taking the historical and cultural blocks in Beijing's old downtowns as the research object,this study adopts the survey methods of participatory observation and semi-structured interviews to investigate,research and analyze the community building projects with artistic intervention,finding that Chaoyangmen Sub-district has effectively enhanced local public participation and developed distinctive public cultural spaces through the multi-subject collaborative management,in combination of art intervention in community building.Through art-intervened cultural expression,the building has developed towards a benign and new-type community communication approach.After practice and exploration on the basis of existing projects,this research finds that the appeals of local cultural institutions are mainly concerning the activation and operation of cultural spaces,in order to identify a self-blood-producing operation model and attract more youth momenta.The community building in Beijing's old downtowns also encounters certain problems,such as space utilization,public participation,intervention mode,funding,and follow-up support.This study summarizes some experiences in public art's intervention in the building of historical and cultural blocks and communities in Beijing's old downtowns: multi-subject collaboration and participation in the early period,continuous public participation in the middle period,and community engagement through cultural identity in the later period.A path is proposed: Focus on cultural construction,including themes of community cultures,operation of cultural spaces,and production of community memories.Specific ways for public art to intervene in community building are proposed: create brands for historical and cultural blocks,intervene in the revival of traditional cultures,and explore ways of cooperation between governments and social organizations.
