| William Somerset Maugham is a British novelist who was born in Paris.His life is colorful.Maugham has enjoyed a great reputation before his death.His novels are loved by readers all over the world.And space is the core power throughout Maugham’s life.Maugham’s unique spatial experience determines his spatial position,and then affects his communication of spatial experience and the adoption of spatial narrative strategy,which makes his works present a unique spatial writing.The description of space in the works is not only a simple natural description,these places are not only the real life places of Maugham’s life,but also the activity places of the characters in the novel.There is a huge tension between the real memory and the fictional reality.Thus,the artistic effect of truth and illusion is produced.Some spaces containing emotion and memory are connected with Maugham’s life experience and writing,which gives birth to his unique life experience.Based on the analysis methods of narratology and textology,this paper takes Maugham’s novel "trilogy"-shackles of life,moon and sixpence and blade as the main analysis objects,discusses the special significance of spatial narrative for the theme expression and character image shaping of Maugham’s novels,and shows the unique ideological and artistic characteristics of his literary creation.This paper is mainly divided into the following four parts:The introduction mainly discusses Maugham and his works at home and abroad,spatial theory,the significance of this study,and his personal experience and spatial writing.It can be seen from this that Maugham has experienced conflicts between different regions and cultures in his whole life.The first chapter is the construction of foreign space in the trilogy of Maugham’s novel.Through the narration of the hero’s pursuit of Tahiti like an Eden and Shangri La like India,it presents a dynamic feature of horizontal cultural exchange between the East and the west,trying to express the experience of people in the process of finding material and spiritual home.Through the exploration of foreign space,as well as the use of different ways to exchange different space culture,the performance of different cultural space values and outlook on life.Therefore,the construction and description of foreign space is not only the expression of other cultures,but also the reflection of self-identity,which achieves the transcendence of the two in the description and reflection.The second chapter is the western urban space construction of Maugham’s trilogy.Through the discussion of the city of dreams--Paris,the city of imprisonment--London,the city of desire--Chicago,people’s confusion and reflectionin the urban space are expressed.And through the reflection of the city and the countryside,it reflects the emotional penetration of the opposite space image and the cultural reflection significance.The third chapter explores the spatial narrative structure and strategy of Maugham’s trilogy.The spatial narration of Maugham’s novels is especially reflected in the construction of spatial forms.He uses juxtaposition narration to deal with the space and time problems of the novels.He intentionally breaks the linear time flow,and constructs the spatial forms such as circle type and box type in the novel text,which makes the narrative structure of the novels present the spatial characteristics,thus producing unexpected narrative effects.Make it show the spatial characteristics of the plot. |
