This thesis is an E-C translation report with its source texts excerpted from Why We Should Read.It is a book review written by Stuart Petre Brodie Mais.In this book,Mais analyzes and praises his favorite English and foreign books and their authors,so as to encourage people to read books they have never read before and he hopes that readers could appreciate books instead of being too critical. The report firstly introduces the background and significance, then the translation process is described, including the preparation before translation, comprehension and expression as well as proofreading after translation. Then, the report summarizes the difficulties in the actual translation process at the lexical level and the syntactic level.Seen from the lexical level, translation difficulties are caused by polysemy and idioms and proverbs and seen from the syntactic level, translation difficulties exist in elliptical sentences and long and complex sentences. After that, the report discusses the translation methods adopted at the lexical level and syntactic level. At the lexical level, the adopted translation methods mainly include choice of word meaning and conversion of part of speech while at the syntactic level, they consist of addition, division, affirmative and negative translation, change of voice and reconstruction. The application of functional equivalence theory to render translation of excerpts from Why We Should Read has been testified by the present research. As to the book review translation, the translator shall pay attention to the complete conveying of the original information and the reproduction of book review style and achieve functional equivalence through the above-mentioned translation methods.
