This translation report is mainly about the translation practice of Chapter 1-3 of the novel Faithful, written by Alice Hoffman who is one of the most influential female authors in the U.S.A.The book demonstrates a hurt girl's road to seek her true happiness from dark sufferings. It is a moving portrait of a young woman forging ahead in the modern world, imparting a kind of heart healing power to the readers.Up to now,no Chinese version of this English novel has been published.According to the language features of the translation task, the translator applies Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory as the theoretical framework of the report. This report is composed of five parts: task introduction, process description, theoretical framework, case study and conclusion. This novel includes some polysemous words,culture-loaded expressions, long and difficult sentences as well as many dialogues with diverse emotions. This report studies the translation material from the perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory at the lexical level and syntactical level. At the lexical level, diction, annotation and conversion are major skills. At the syntactical level, the translator adopts adjustment of word order, division, amplification and the use of four-letter expression to make the translation acceptable and readable. This translation practice is of great significance to guide the translator in the translation of similar literary works.Due to the limited length of the translation and the limited number of cases, there are some deficiencies in the combination of the translation practice and theory. Therefore,it requires the translator to further enrich practical experience and improve translation ability.
