On The C-E Translation Of Chan-Kuo Ts'e From The Perspective Of Topology

Topology,as a branch of mathematics,focuses on the invariability preserved through deformations of geometric figures,which is called the topological property: invariability within variability.George Steiner,a famous American scholar in translation,is the first to study translation from the perspective of topology,creating an innovative way for translation.In recent years,scholars have been studying translation based on topology,but few studies have been made on the topological property of translation.The thesis analyzes the English translation of Chan-Kuo Ts‘e by the American Sinologist James.I.Crump from the perspective of topology,with an aim to answer the following questions: First,what is the topological property of translation? Second,how many flexible strategies does Crump adopt when translating Chan-Kuo Ts‘e? Third,does his translation reflect the topological property of translation? Through the exploration,the thesis finds that first of all,culture succession is a topological transformation process with its topological property.As one of the most important ways of cultural communication,translation is characterized by its invariability and variability.Generally speaking,the invariability can be reflected in the meanings of the original text while the variability in the flexible strategies which are used to convey as complete as possible the meanings of the original text.In other words,the topological property of translation means that when translating,translators should use the flexible strategies to express the total meanings of the original text.Secondly,the flexible strategies that Crump uses in translation mainly include the part-of-speech conversions,the amplifications and the syntactic transformations.The appendix I collects38 examples where Crump adopts the strategy of the part-of-speech conversions,showing that the part-of-speech conversions mainly involve the change from verbs to nouns.The appendix II collects 34 examples where Crump adopts the strategy of the amplifications.There are 363 examples where Crump adopts the strategy of the syntactic transformations.They are collected in the appendix III,IV and V,showing that the usage rate of syntactic transformations is the highest among the three transformation strategies and that the syntactic transformations can be further divided into the subject transformations,the attribute transformations and the adverb transformations.Thirdly,Crump adopts the three strategies in translation,but the original meanings of the Chinese source text are well keptin the English translation.Therefore,it is clear that Crump's translation is topological in nature.In the end,the thesis also shows that the application of topology in translation can better reveal the topological property of translation and help translators treat the relationship between the source text and the target text more dialectically.As a result,the translation studies can be improved.
