A Report On The Chinese-english Translation Of TCM Papers Concerning Pediatric Pneumonia

This thesis is a report on Chinese-English translation task.Three included papers concerning pediatric pneumonia with panting cough in TCM concept were selected from Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine,which is a recognized journal on oriental medicine.The authors of the three papers expound their experience of cause identification and treatment of pediatric pneumonia with panting cough from different angles.This report aimed to discuss the translation difficulties of TCM papers and their translation methods and strategies.The translated texts were limited to educated readers capable of comprehending the basic theory of TCM due to the type of source texts.In view of the features of the source texts and target language system,the translator largely shared the principles of modern medical translation,that is,faithfulness to medical content,scientific nature in style,conventionality and standardization in medical expression.The translator maximally guaranteed the smooth logical flow and accuracy in content of the translated texts.During translation,the translator had not only learnt from the previous experience and achievements of our predecessors and critically accepted the suggestions of relevant studies,but also based on his own translation experience.In case analysis,prescriptive,borrowing and paraphrasing translations were adopted for TCM translation at lexical level;common translation methods including nominalization,content conversion,combination,division,omission and addition are widely applied for TCM translation at syntactic level.The translated texts were proofread by bilingual professor of TCM to ensure the quality of translation.Phenomenon of “mixed” logic relation was found during translation and first put forward.Note that the “mixed” logical relation within a term has to give way to that between terms within a sentence.TCM translation requires the translator’s background knowledge of TCM and modern medicine,so as to better spread TCM knowledge into the target language system.Through the translation practice,the translator realized the importance of the formation of TCM language system in target language system,as well as the importance of the interactive participation of a TCM translator.
