A Study Of C-E Consecutive Interpreting Strategies Of Chinese Four-Character Expressions:An Eco-Tanslatology Approach

This thesis concerns itself with an Eco-Translatology Theory approach to the interpreting strategies of Chinese four-character expressions in Chinese-English interpretation.The previous studies have explored the interpreting strategies of Chinese four-character expressions under different approaches,but most of their interpreting strategies are often simple,and little consideration has been given to the interpreting strategies of Chinese four-character expressions from the aspects of language,culture and communication.Eco-Translatology claims that linguistic dimension,cultural dimension and communicative dimension should all be taken into consideration.Therefore,this thesis employs Eco-Translatology Theory to study the interpreting strategies of Chinese four-character expressions in C-E consecutive interpretation,specifically devoted to the following three questions:(1)In Chinese-English consecutive interpretation,what strategies can be applied to deal with Chinese four-character expressions from linguistic dimension?(2)In Chinese-English consecutive interpretation,what strategies can be applied to deal with Chinese four-character expressions from cultural dimension?(3)In Chinese-English consecutive interpretation,what strategies can be applied to deal with Chinese four-character expressions from communicative dimension?The thesis identifies itself as a qualitative and case study.The data are collected from Chinese-English interpretation texts of the press conference of the two conferences in 2019.It is concluded that:(1)From linguistic dimension,the main interpreting strategies adopted include literal translation at lexical level,shift at syntactical level and paraphrase at rhetorical level.(2)From cultural dimension,the translator mainly adopted the interpreting strategies of idiomatic translation,combination and free translation at the level of transmission of cultural connotation,andthe interpreting strategies of paraphrase and free translation at the level of cultural interpretation.(3)From communicative dimension,the interpreting strategies of paraphrase,free translation,literal translation and addition are mainly adopted at the levels of being meaning oriented and serviced oriented.The significance of this thesis is mainly manifested in the following two aspects:it is expected to shed some light on C-E consecutive interpreting strategies of Chinese four-character expressions on one hand,and to extend the application of Eco-Translatology Theory on the other hand.
