This thesis is a translation practice report written based on the patent abstract translation experience of the author as an intern in 21 GCTT. Statistical analysis on the translation products points to a major obstacle in patent abstract translation, the improper treatment on long sentences. It is found that the translated long sentences are deviated from the source text, comprising trivial sentences lack of logic. The author applies the Metalinguistic Function Theory under Systemic Functional Grammar to perform functional component analysis on problematic long sentences in the translation practice, and adjusts accordingly the sentence structure, in an effort to solve the above mentioned problems. Test on the quality of the result shows that the quality and efficiency of the translation in the patent abstract translation project are improved thereupon. |
