A Report On C-E Translation Of A Sequel To Local Chronicle Of Shangqiu Prefecture(excerpts)

The source text of the translation report is selected from A Sequel to Local Chronicle of Shangqiu Prefecture,which was written by Shangqiu Local Chronicles Office and published in 2003.It records many aspects of Shangqiu Prefecture from 1986 to 1997 in detail and the author is entrusted by Shangqiu Local Chronicles Office to translate the overview of it.Because of the number of words in the overview,the author selects 6 parts of it as the source text of the translation report,covering Shangqiu Prefecture's traffic,history and culture,business and trade,tourism and so on.When translating the source text,the author chooses Skopos Theory put forward by Hans Vermeer as the guiding theory and selects proper translation methods according to the three rules of the theory.Moreover,the author uses examples to analyze the translation in the translation report from lexical level and syntactical level.The translation at lexical level includes the translation of four-character structures and culture-loaded words,and the translation at syntactical level covers the translation of long sentences and non-subject sentences.When translating four-character structures and culture-loaded words,the author uses literal translation,free translation and omission for the former and transliteration with annotation,literal translation with annotation and free translation for the latter,so that to convey the information and cultural connotations in the source text to target readers.When the author translates long sentences and non-subject sentences,he applies linear translation,reverse translation,reorganization and division for the former and “adding the subject”,“translating non-subject sentences into passive sentences” for the latter,so that target readers can better understand the target text.Through the translation of the task the author finds that Skopos Theory can give guidance to the translation of local chronicles.The purposes of the task are to convey information in the source text to target readers and show them Chinese culture.Therefore the author chooses proper translation methods for different translation difficulties according to the three rules of Skopos Theory,and finally realizes the purposes of translation.
