An Analysis On Consecutive Interpreting In Light Of Constructivist Translatology

Proposed by Professor Lv Jun in 2006,Constructivist Theory is a relative new study paradigm of translation theory based on practical philosophy,communicative rationality,speech act and consensus theory of truth.Constructivist Translatology argues that translation and interpreting should not only comply with the constitutional rules of language,but also follow the principle of communicative language,also known as regulative rules,for translation activity is essentially a kind of communication between different people and cultures with the social and practical nature.Hence Constructivist Translatology proposes three translation criteria with which this thesis conducted a case study on consecutive interpreting: 1)No violation of the objectivity of knowledge;2)The rationality of understanding and the universal validity of interpretation;3)Alignment with the source language.This thesis analyzes an on-the-spot lecture consecutive interpreting with the three criteria proposed by Constructivist Translatology.During the analysis,several factors are taken into consideration and put into social interaction and cultural environment,including the language,speaker,interpreter,audience and the environment,in an attempt to improve the accuracy and acceptability of the interpreting.Under the guidance of these three translation criteria,this thesis draws the following conclusions: Firstly,it is quite often for the novice interpreter to deliver interpretation against the objective facts or common sense.This reminds the majority of interpreters to explore a wide range of subject and improve their knowledge reserves while focusing on promoting their interpreting skills.Secondly,the speaker's speech styles vary from different occasions.Misinterpretations may occur when there are too many ellipsis and pronouns.Interpreters can adopt the strategy of addition in order that the interpretation delivered can be widely understandable without leading into confusion.Thirdly,to better match the style of the source language,interpreters should work to improve the ability of analyzing the notes taken during the interpreting so as to grasp the logic and frame of the context.
