As one of the required courses for students in senior high school in China,English plays an important role in learning.In the process of English learning,reading is a more important part,especially in English teaching in senior high school,reading is the core content and teaching focus of each unit.However,in the traditional reading teaching methods,most teachers pay more attention to the explanation of vocabulary and grammar,so students can not understand the text as a whole according to the language points,and the teaching effect is not very ideal.Therefore,how to teach reading effectively has become one of the main issues concerned by both teachers and researchers.Since the 1990 s,genre-based teaching approach has come into the field of vision of teachers and researchers.According to the different structural characteristics of the discourse,the genre-based teaching approach aims to cultivate students' genre awareness,which aims to make students understand the language and structural features of different genres,and then improve their reading ability.This thesis applies the genre-based teaching approach to the teaching of English reading in senior high school,and it includes two research questions.: 1.What are the effects of genre-based teaching approach on students' reading ability in senior high school? 2.What is the influence of genre-based teaching approach on senior high school students' interest in English reading?This thesis uses pre-test,post-test,questionnaire and interview as the research methods.In the process of the experiment,the author chooses two classes from grade one in a high school in Shenyang,the two classes use the same teaching materials,theexperimental class adopts the genre-based teaching approach and the control class adopts the traditional teaching method.The questionnaires are distributed in the experimental class before and after the experiment.At the end of the experiment,SPSS is used to analyze the data of pre-test,post-test and questionnaire,and through interviews with students to understand their attitude towards the use of genre analysis in reading teaching.The results show that genre-based teaching approach does have a positive effect on students' reading ability,at the same time,it can stimulate students' interest in English reading,enhance students' confidence in English reading and form good reading habits.To sum up,the genre-based teaching approach is feasible in English teaching in senior high school.
