This is an E-C translation report on Autonomy,Agency and Identity in Teaching and Learning English as a Foreign Language(chapters1-2)written by Mark ·Feng Teng.The writer of this original text is a language teacher and educator with extensive teaching and research experience in China.The first chapter conceptualizes the importance of learner autonomy from different perspectives.The second chapter expounds teacher autonomy in the domain of EFL teaching and highlights the value of supporting EFL teachers while raising their awareness of teacher autonomy.As an academic information text,the source text is not easy to understand and translate.The translator encountered some difficulties in the process of translation and summarized them into three levels: lexical,syntactic and discipline level.At lexical level,the difficulties include translation of polysemy,phrases and educational terminology.At syntactic level,the difficulties mainly contain translation of passive sentences,attributive clauses and long and difficult sentences.At discipline level,according to the characteristics of the text,the difficulties are how to achieve conciseness,faithfulness and readability in translation.In the report,the translator analyzes and elaborates on the translation methods and skills to solve correspondingly the translating difficulties.The translator adopts the methods of semantic selection,extension and literal translation to solve lexical difficulties,the methods of change of voice,domestication and division to solve syntactic difficulties and the methods of omission,free translation and conversion to solve the difficulties at discipline level.In this translation practice,the Chinese translation of the source text in English can provide target readers with advanced educational ideas and make them think about how to improve the education quality in China.Meanwhile,the translator gains translation experience and improves translation ability,which will certainly be significant to future study and work.
