Globalization has made new requirements on foreign language teaching. AnIntroduction to Foreign Language Learning and Teaching written by Keith Johnsonhelps new teachers to have a comprehensive knowledge of foreign language learningand teaching. This report is a summary of the translation of Chapter12of AnIntroduction to Foreign Language Learning and Teaching. With examples from theoriginal text, this report discusses translation difficulties and their solutions underPeter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory.Firstly, the author of this report introduces the background and the author of theoriginal text, and the meaning of this project. Secondly, this report describes thetranslation process from the aspects of translation preparation, theoreticalbackground, translation difficulties and their solutions and proofreading aftertranslation. During translation process, the author finds long sentences are key to thetranslation. Under Newmark’s communicative translation, the author then undertakesa case study by using some translation methods like readjustment of sentences,amplification and omission. With the understanding of the inner logic relations oflong sentences, Chinese grammar rules occupy the priority in guiding the translationof long sentences so that these translated sentences are in accordance with Chineselanguage and finally realize their communicative functions. In the end, the authorhopes to provide inspiration and reference on the future studies to some extent.
