A Report Of E-C Translation Of A Shipbuilding Contract Under The Guidance Of The Skopos Theory

The recent years has witnessed an increase of international ship trading in China with the support of the Belt and Road Initiative.People paid more attention to the translation of the shipbuilding contract because of its importance in facilitating the ship trading.As a legal text,the shipbuilding contract is featured with specialized knowledge of shipbuilding industry,so it is more complicated than general international business contract.Thus,it is necessary to discuss the translation of the shipbuilding contract.This report is based on part of the English-Chinese translation of a shipbuilding contract commissioned by a shipyard.The author introduces the translation process and analyzes the linguistic features of source text at lexical level and syntactic level.Under the guidance of the skopos theory,some strategies and approaches are proposed by the author to address the problems that occur in the translation process.The author points out that the principles of accuracy and loyalty should be applied when translating a shipbuilding contract from English to Chinese.For specific methods,at lexical level,literal translation and omission are recommended.At syntactic level,voice conversion,division and accepted sentences rendering are suggested.
