With the development of the international trade and investment,the company brochure plays an increasingly important role in image-building and product promotion.To build its image and find clients in the Chinese market,UniSA Ventures commissioned the author to translate UniSA Ventures Brochure from English to Simplified Chinese.The company brochure UniSA Ventures Brochure is composed of four parts: Part One is “Introduction to the Company”,providing the basic information of UniSA Ventures and its team members;Part Two is “Scientific Projects”,introducing the company's current scientific projects.The first two parts contain abundant technical terms and the strong logic as a discourse.Part Three is “Main Products”,advertising each product through imperative sentences,second-person narration and illustrations.Part Four is “Policies and Agreements”,presenting the intention and stance of UniSA Ventures in the cooperation through business legal documents.Modal verb,passive voice and consistent format are stressed in this part.In order to find a suitable theory as a guidance in the author's translation work,she consulted a lot of theories concerned,finding that Newmark's text typology was helpful.Newmark divides the whole texts into three major types based on their distinctive language functions.In Newmark's words,a text can be informative,vocative or expressive.Despite that,no text can exclusively be of one function;on the contrary,most texts have all of the three functions at a time.Taking the features of this company brochure for example,the author found that the four parts mentioned above have all the fundamental function of being informative.However,it is worth noting that each part of this company brochure has one dominant function.With a focus on the objective description of technologies,Part One and Part Two feature the informative function.Part Three advertises the main products with instructions appealing to clients to buy and use the company's products,which conforms to the vocative function.Part Four is mainly about business legal documents.Newmark believes that legal documents has the expressive function.Instead of analyzing the text from lexical and syntactical levels,the author picked up the typical features of each part in line with the functions of Newmark's text typology.Finally,the author revised the translation according to translation requirements and Newmark's text typology till it was accepted by UniSA Ventures.With the translation task completed,the author summarized the lessons learned by the author as the translator in this project.
