The task is based on the work The Crest of the Continent by American author Ernest Ingersoll. The book consists of 37 chapters in total and this report is based on some of these chapters.Taking the location as the writing clue, these selected chapters record the Ingersoll's experience in traveling Colorado,USA.The book covers a wide range of topics and is rich in language.Ingersoll,in the book, uses many long sentences, combining narration, description with feeling expression. In the process of English-Chinese translation, the author found that the prepositions and prepositional phrases in this book are used more frequently, and because the prepositions are highly dependent on the context, and the same one English preposition has many different Chinese meanings. Therefore, this report mainly focuses on the translation of the prepositions and prepositional phrases.Guided by Skopos Theory of translation, the report uses traditional translation skills to explore the translation of prepositions and prepositional phrases in The Crest of the Continent. This report is divided into five chapters: Chapter One is the task description. It mainly includes task background and task meaning. The Chapter Two is the task process, which mainly introduces pre-translation preparation, translation process, and proofreading. The Chapter Three “the Skopos Theory and the translation of prepositional phrases” briefly introduces the origin, development and three rules of Skopos Theory, the characteristics and traditional translation of prepositions and prepositional phrases, and then analyzes the use of prepositions and prepositional phrases in The Crest of the Continent. The Chapter Four makes case study on the basis of original text, using traditional translation skills such as omission and amplification, conversion and literal translation, division and combination to discuss the translation of prepositions and prepositional phrases in The Crest of the Continent.Chapter Five “the summary of the translation practice” makes a brief summary to the gains and deficiencies of this translation practice.
