The Crest of the Continent is the work of Ernest Ingersoll,a renowned American naturalist, writer and explorer. It is the record of the writer's investigation about all aspects of the Rocky Mountains when he explored. This book is long and covers the regional landscape, ecological environment and local customs of the United States.During the process of translation, the author finds that there are many attributive clauses and their components are complex. Thus more attention should be paid to the completeness of sentence elements and readability and acceptability of the translation.Based on the first principle of German functionalist skopos theory, this report mainly talks about the attributive clauses which frequently appear in this translation material, trying to combine with the traditional translation techniques and analyzing concrete translation techniques in order to achieve the translation purpose. It will provide experience and reference for the similar sentence.Under the guidance of the Skopos rule in the Skopos theory, this paper analyzes and discusses the translation methods of attributive clauses based on the problems found in translation practice. And it learned from the traditional translation techniques. The report is divided into five parts: the first chapter is the description of the task process, including the background, significance and corresponding requirements of the task;the second chapter is the task process, which is divided into three stages: pre-translation preparation, translation process and the proofreading after translation;the third chapter analyzes the linguistic features and the translation difficulties of the source text;the fourth chapter is the case study, which is the focus of the report. The report is guided by the Skopos rule and aims to satisfy the reading habits of the target readers.According to the sentence pattern and the length, the author adopted the method of pre-position,combination,postposition and conversion to solve the translation problems. The fifth chapter is theconclusion, which summarizes the experience of this report and points out the shortcomings.
