| Due to its fast-growing economy and significant potential market,India has become a preferred choice for many Chinese enterprises in seeking overseas expansion. As an important stop of the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road,it is necessary to get more knowledge about India. The source text of this translation project is from What China and India Once Were:The Pasts That May Shape the Global Future, which made detailed comparison between China and India from perspectives of politics, economy, culture, etc.,while Chapter One Life and Energy focused on energy and activities closely related to the transmission of energy, including water and food, forest and domesticated animals, political ecology, megafauna, textile and other manufacturers, and migration, which have rarely been covered by Chinese scholars who are into the research of India. The theoretical guidance of this translation comes from Vinay and Darbelnet’s model, which introduced two translation strategies—direct translation and oblique translation, and seven translation techniques, including borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence and adaptation. In this translation project, oblique translation is applied with flexibility when direct translation failed to deliver a good translation.Translation difficulties, including proper nouns, passive voice, attributive clauses and long sentences, have been solved, which justifies the theoretical guidance of Vinay and Darbelnet’s model. |
