In Comparative Stylistics of French and English,J.P.Vinay and J.Darbelnet conduct a comprehensive and detailed comparison and analysis between French and English from three aspects--word level, syntactic structure and message. They propose two translation strategies,1)direct translation which covers three translation procedures, borrowing, calque and literal translation, and 2)indirect translation, including four translation procedures, transposition, modulation, equivalence and adaptation. The cases of this report are taken from the E-C translation of chapter 5 to 7 in Power to Teach: Learning through Practice. This book illustrates hitherto unexamined connections between the present state of teacher education in the UK and past models of practice. It locates contemporary debates within ongoing historical tensions over what constitutes a sound and proper start to a career in teaching.Through an analysis of typical cases, the main body of the report applies the seven procedures to solve the lexical and syntactic problems encountered by the author in the translation.Problems found in the practice can be categorized into five groups--proper nouns, word class, negative expression, passive voice and complex sentences. In the process of analysis and translation, the author of this report cuts the problems into small units and solves them one by one.Solution approaches are raised based on Vinay and Darbelnet's model, whose borrowing, transposition and modulation are commonly adopted in the practice to retain the color of the ST and yield authentic and acceptable TT.Through this translation practice,it is discovered that English and Chinese are quite different in grammar and expression habits. In the E-C translation, some translation skills must be applied to shift the two so that the TT is idiomatic;Vinay and Darbelnet classifies countless skills into just seven which, with great practical guiding value, could serve to solve the problems encountered in the translation practice accordingly.
