A Translation Practice Report Of The Plaza:the Secret Life Of America'S Most Famous Hotel (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Gadamer's Hermeneutics

With the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and the building of a community with a shared future for mankind,international exchanges and cooperation are increasingly deepened,which puts forward higher requirements for translation works and makes the center of translation shift from literary works to non-literary works.The Plaza: The Secret Life of America's Most Famous Hotel is the first architecture book written by an award-winning journalist Julie Satow,the regular contributor covered real estate to the New York Times.After the investigation for three years,she presented readers with the changes in the hotel and past anecdotes,which helped readers understand the changes in New York society since the 19 th century.Hermeneutics originated from the linguistic in ancient Greeks and developed from biblical hermeneutics.In the history of hermeneutics,Gadamer first connected practice with theory.Since the 20 th century,this theory has gradually developed and applied to many fields such as religion,history,linguistics,psychology,and literature.In recent years,hermeneutics has been used in the field of translation,but it is mostly used for the comparative appreciation of literary works' translation,discussion of translatable and untranslatable,and cultural interpretation.From the perspective of hermeneutic translation practice,this practice report aims to further interpret and understand Gadamer's hermeneutics through translation practice and further explores the change of translator's identity,and ultimately leads the translation readers to glimpse the changing times of New York in the United States from the changes in hotels described by contemporary journalists.The report first introduced the current status of hermeneutics research at home and abroad,summarized Gadamer and his hermeneutics,and then briefly introduced The Plaza: The Secret Life of America's Most Famous Hotel and its author's style and characteristics.The report analyzes and disassembles the typical cases where theories of understanding,historical integration and effect history play an important role in the case analysis.In the research,the translator explored the three identities of the translator: the reader identity highlighted by historic understanding,the spokesperson identity required by the fusion of horizons,and the creator identity hiddenbehind the effect history,It is concluded in practice that the three identities circulate continuously during translation,and the translator could recreate the value of the original text and assign values to the target text.There are many difficulties to overcome during the translation,such as balancing retaining the writer's style and meeting readers' reading habits,processing abbreviations and nicknames of authors,and the disassembling and combination of components from long and difficult sentences.However,while solving the difficulties,the translator gained a lot by expanding horizons,which points out the direction for future study.
