This paper analyzes the Chinese textbook "Gateway to Mandarin Chinese 1" according to the language elements,and draws the following conclusions:First of all,it's the phonetics.By comparing with “Boya Chinese primary start Chapter 1”,we find that although the phonetics in "Gateway to Mandarin Chinese 1" is relatively comprehensive,it may be too close in arrangement,which makes the phonetics' introduction not detailed enough,and same to phonetics exercises.Secondly,the part of vocabulary discusses the standardization of characteristic vocabulary and mandarin vocabulary as a whole,and then investigates the applicability of vocabulary to the students of the school through the analyzing the "vocabulary level" and "vocabulary recurrence rate".Finally,it makes a detailed investigation of "vocabulary annotation" from the perspective of arrangement.The results show that:there are a small number of nonstandard words or phrases used in "Gateway to Mandarin Chinese 1";the proportion of A-level words is less;there are more than half words,whose number of recurrence does not meet the standard for students to remember;and the vocabulary annotation is not detailed enough...Then there are grammar and Chinese characters.Grammar part,after the statistics and analysis of the grammar in the textbook,the author finds that the grammar level of the book basically meets the requirements of the grammar outline of Grade A,but there are many problems,such as too many grammar,less grammar practice,repetition of grammar points and incomplete grammar annotation.In the partof Chinese characters,the paper analyzes the Chinese characters' level,selection and content arrangement by combining with “Chinese character exercise book 1”.In the analysis,we find that the Chinese characters are all in line with the learning of primary Chinese learners,but the matching exercise book is not perfect in content distribution.Finally,based on the results of language element analysis,questionnaires are designed for students and teachers to understand the users' views on this four elements.Then combined with the results of the analysis and the questionnaire,we put forward some suggestions for the improvement of "Gateway to Mandarin Chinese 1",such as increasing the number of phonetics exercises,improving the repetition rate of vocabulary,standardizing the grammar notes and refining the content of “Chinese character exercise book 1”.
