Press Conferences during the “two sessions” have always been regarded as an important channel for people to hear China's voice and to know about China's attitudes, stances and policies.Interpreters are messengers who have the ability to reorganize the information that needs to be delivered.Interpreters' subjectivities have a strong connection with the effectiveness of information transmission and play a significant role in building and maintaining China's image in the world. Therefore,it is important for interpreters to adjust their strategies according to specific situations.Under Michel Foucault's theory of power and discourse, this thesis focuses on power relations, expressions in discourses and subjectivities of interpreters.Based on the relation of power and discourse, this thesis uses text information of press conferences during the “two sessions” from 2010 to 2018 as corpus.Considering different identities of the Chinese premier(as a person who answers questions)and the press(as questioners),this thesis analyzes interpreters' subjectivities in specific contexts and strategies.During the conferences, interpreters have to understand the purpose of the conferences and avoid conflicts in discourses.Interpreters need to have a good knowledge of languages which are used in the conferences as well.During the conferences, interpreters have the tendency to use methods of adding, omitting and combination of free translation and literal translation as approaches to smooth the discourse.By using those methods, interpreters could make effective information transmission, choose proper words and expressions for the targeted audience to strike a balance between those respondents and those questioners who represent different national powers and interests. At the same time, this thesis provides a new theoretical approach to political and diplomatic interpretations, which is based on the power of discourses and subjectivities of interpreters. This thesis focuses on power relations, discourse expressions, and interpreters' subjectivities. It explores the interaction between discourses and power relations of the society. This research may also contribute to the further study of connections among interpreters' subjectivities, power relations, and discourses.
