With the rapid development of China's translation industry, popular science translation works, whose main purpose is to popularize scientific knowledge to the public, gradually come into the public's vision.Popular science works have a certain degree of disciplinarity and specialization. As they are difficult and technical, they are different from the translation of literary works.Because of the wide range of audiences and the large number of target readers, the narrative content of popular science works needs to be easy and simple to understand. This translation practice report is based on the translation of Chapter 6 of Professor Matthew Walker's Why We Sleep. This chapter mainly describes the benefits of sleep for the brain, the impact of different stages of sleep on memory before and after learning, and expounds the relationship between sleep and memory in detail. The content of the text is close to the reality of life, which helps readers better understand sleep knowledge and have a new understanding of the importance of sleep.Under the guidance of Skopos theory, the translator follows three rules of Skopos Theory: skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, and studies the content of chapter six from two aspects of vocabulary and syntax.Translator should adopt different translation methods for different translation works. In terms of vocabulary translation, translator chooses the methods of word extension and word formation to accurately convey the meaning of the original words. In terms of syntax, the translator analyzed the differences between Chinese and English sentence patterns, clarifies the logical relations among sentences, and tries to reproduce the content and features of the original text so that readers can understand the essence of the original.Through this translation practice, the translator not only improves his translation ability, but also grasps the relevant knowledge about sleep.By writing a practice report, the translator's theoretical knowledge and professional ability are strengthened. This translation practice provides reference for the translation of similar works.
