Contemporary Russian writer Alexe Varlamov's novel The Sunken Ark is One of long representative works.The plot of the novel is set in two geographical spaces: the modern metropolis of Petersburg and the village of Bukhara in the Primeval Forest.In Petersburg,there are a group of secret castrators;A group of secessionists live in a quaint and mysterious village in Siberia.The stories of the two spaces are closely linked by the fate of the protagonist,Martha.In this paper,The Sunken Ark has been brought into the text of "the theme of Petersburg " in Russia for analysis and research,making comprehensive use of urban space theory,urban image theory and other research techniques.Petersburg writing in the atmosphere of eschatology at the end of the 20 th century is explored from four aspects: The urban image of Petersburg,the urban space of Petersburg,the Petersburg People in The Sunken Ark and the theme of Religious Redemption in The Sunken Ark.An in-depth interpretation of Varlamov's deep reflection and concern for the spiritual dilemma of modern Russians in the new century.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,the full text is divided into four chapters,four chapters are focused on the narrative content.The introduction part introduces the research status of Varlamov's works,the image of the Ark in the Bible literature,the Thought of Russian Orthodox Church Doomsday,the theory of urban geography and urban space,the theme of Petersburg and the city of Petersburg in Russian literature,and the aim,significance and innovation of this thesis.The first chapter focuses on the images of Petersburg as "the capital of Sin","the city of doom" and "the land waiting for redemption" in The Sunken Ark.As the most European modern city in Russia,Petersburg,while successfully opening a new period of Russian modernization,inevitably suffers from the "alienation" and "erosion" of the city caused by the malpractices of modernity.As "the capital of Sin"-"Gomorrah"."The capital of Sin" as well as the existence of "the antichrist" and the appearance of "the capital of Sin",the image of "the city of Doom".Finally,petersburg is both a source of evil and a city of hope waiting to be redeemed,transformed into an "unsinkable Ark" of God's eternal truth.In the second chapter,the urban space in Petersburg is analyzed,including the building next to the griboyetov canal,the "Moscow" railway station two typical urban spaces.This paper further reveals the spatial images of "the capital of Sin" and "the city of doom" in Petersburg,comprehensively and profoundly analyzes the historical origin of the spatial images and enlarges the dark side of Petersburg City under its bright and beautiful appearance.The third chapter combs the "people of Petersburg" in The Sunken Ark,according to Typology,the characters are classified as "men living in seclusion on the edge of society","women being insulted and damaged" and "free slaves as non-women".Thus,the struggle of modern people in Petersburg in the huge whirlpool of "objectified" "consumerism" can be seen from all sides.Varlamov brought the symbolic figures together in Petersburg,where they fought a fierce battle between good and evil.Although the "Petersburg People" in the pursuit of truth and freedom in the road repeatedly into the plight of the lost and suffering,but can persevere until the final "new life".In the Fourth Chapter,the author summarizes the theme of Religious Salvation in the "writing of Petersburg".On the one hand,we try to construct the whole personality by overcoming the split between "reason" and "belief".On the other hand,we try to eliminate the suppression of totalitarianism,exploring the theme of Freedom and "Love" the core theme.The conclusion summarizes the above,and analyzes that the inheritance and innovation of the Petersburg text,which worried about the modernization road of Russia and the expectation of building a better society.
