Memes of Translation: the Spread of Ideas in Translation Theory is an academic book written by Andrew Chesterman. The author discusses and concludes some representative ideas in translation theory, and then on this basis of that he puts forward his own theoretical system with unique perspective and novel content. This book is of great academic value. Thus, introduced by the supervisor,a translation team composed of four 2017 grade MTI students from Xihua University is entrusted by a translation agency to jointly accomplish the translation of this book. This report is based on the chapter four and the first fourth sections of chapter five of Memes of Translation: the Spread of Ideas in Translation Theory.Guided by Newmark's translation theory, this report explores the difficulties and solutions in the translation of academic theoretical books. This book has the characteristics of informational text and expressive text according to Newmark's text classification theory.Considering the characteristics of academic text and its purpose which is to deliver information, this translation should be under the guidance of the communicative translation theory proposed by Newmark. In the translating process, the translator needs to be target-reader-oriented and to achieve the same desired effect as the source readers. This report discusses the difficulties in the process of translating, which are pronouns and connectives at the lexical level, passive voice and long sentences at the syntactic level,as well as the translation of other languages other than English and Chinese involved in the translation, and summarize common solution to those kinds of problems, such as explicitness, implicitness, reorganization, omitting, adding and literal translation. This repost consists of five parts, including: task description, practice process, theoretical basis, cases studies and conclusion. The first part introduces the features of the Memes of Translation and the meaning to translate it;the second one records the process of translating;the third part mainly discusses the theoretical basis of this report that is Newmark's translation theory and its guiding function in detail;the fourth part records the difficulties encountered in the translating process and solutions of them;the last part is the conclusion and reflecting of this practice, among which the fourth part is the most crucial one of this report. The fourth part further discusses the translation strategies applied on academic texts by illustrating prototypical cases. The source txt, target text and term table are all included in the appendix.
