Reading takes great effects in language learning and language teaching.The New Curriculum has clear requirements for primary school English reading,and it is clear that students should be able to read simple stories and essays,form a good habit to read the text according to the meaningful chunks.English picture book is a powerful complementary material to the textbook.In addition,English picture books play a great role in improving interest,expanding vocabulary and mastering learning skills for second language learners in language learning especially for reading.There are many researches and suggestions conducted by scholars for primary school teachers to use the English picture books in teaching effectively.What's more,the criteria and skills on picture book teaching and selecting as well as the effects of picture books have been provided by many researchers.However,previous studies on picture book teaching haven't got rich evidences and experiences in improving students' English reading achievement and interest.Therefore,this research mainly focuses on studying whether primary students' English reading achievement and interest have been improved by the application of picture books.On the basis of the relevant research about English picture book and English picture book reading teaching and the Cognitive Development Theory,Schema Theory and Language Input Hypothesis,the author attempts to study the effect of improving primary students' English reading achievement and interest through English picture books teaching.Thus,this research aims to answer the following two questions:1.Can the English picture books teaching improve primary students' achievement in English reading?2.Can the English picture books teaching arouse primary students' interest in English reading?Eighty students in two parallel classes of Grade 5 in Lanzhou Dong Jiao primary School were selected randomly as the subjects of the experiment.Class 3 is experimental class and class 2 is control class and the experiment has lasted for 8 weeks.The experiment mainly has three parts: the pre-test,the English picture book reading instruction and the post-test.Data were collected through a variety of instruments: tests,questionnaires and interviews.According to the data analyzed by SPSS21.0,the research come to the following conclusions:1.The English picture books teaching can greatly improve primary students' achievement in English reading.2.The English picture books teaching can obviously arouse primary students' interest in English reading.In addition,the author also points out the implications and limitations in the process of reading teaching,which is of great significance to the further study.
