This thesis is a report on the English-Chinese translation project of the first two chapters of The Passing of the Turkish Empire in Europe written by Bernard Granville Baker. The Passing of the Turkish Empire in Europe is a piece of historical text. When introducing the prosperity and fall of countries he crosses, the author also gives weight to record his own experiences in these countries. As author's fourth book centered on the theme of war,The Passing of the Turkish Empire in Europe contains much historical materials. In order to ensure their rigorousness, the author applies many long and difficult sentences which are exactly the difficulty to be discussed in this thesis. When translating those sentences, the translator uses the Skopos Theory as the guidance, and analyzes the influence of its three principles, namely skopos principle, fidelity principle and coherence principle on long and difficult sentences. The skopos principle can boost translator's subjectivity. After translators know the goal of translation, they need to adopt appropriate translation methods to make sure that the target text is not only loyal to the source text, but also fits with target readers' cultural background;the fidelity principle is a constraint to translator's subjectivity, which means that the translator should not abuse the subjectivity and drive the target text deviate from the source text;and the coherence principle focuses on the textual pattern and the coherence of the target text.It requires that the target text should follow the reading habit of target readers.Under the Skopos Theory and its three principles, this thesis combines the abstract translation theory and concrete translation project, and adopts four translation techniques to address the long and difficult sentence translation in The Passing of the Turkish Empire in Europe, which are sequencing, inversion, splitting and comprehensive use of different methods. After finishing this translation project and thesis writing, the translator hopes to deepen the understanding on the Skopos Theory, improve the translation efficiency, and do some benefits to the future translation of similar materials.
