Textual Coherence In Chinese-English Translation And Translation Strategies

The process of translation is essentially to reconstruct the textual coherence.To produce a target text which is clear,cohesive and coherent,a translator should have adequate textual awareness and make a thorough analysis of the source text,and should always remind himself or herself of not falling into the trap of word-for-word translation.In this paper,the author investigates the challenges of achieving textual coherence in Chinese-English translation,and proposes feasible solutions based on a case study on the translation of a book titled Global Cities,which features the use of complex and obscure academic language.Apart from ensuring the objectiveness and accuracy of the translated text,a major difficulty in this project is the reestablishment of the textual coherence.In light of this,it is suggested that the translator can use appropriate cohesive devices and thematic progression patterns in the translated text.
