On Strategies To Achieve Textual Coherence In Chinese-English Translation

As focus of translation studies shifts from words and sentences to texts,more and more translators begin to realize the role of textual coherence in translation.To translate is to reconstruct textual coherence in the target text,which means analyzing characteristics of coherence in the source text in the first step,and then transforming to achieve coherence in the target text by using two methods,namely cohesion between words and sentences and logical coherence of text.This thesis is based on a case study of Chinese-English translation of Global Cities to explore strategies for achieving textual coherence in the target text by referring to relevant literature and employing induction method and comparative approach.Following an in-depth analysis,it summarizes coherence characteristics of the source text: implicit cohesion,loose structure and some incoherence.By applying previous research results on difference between Chinese and English in textual coherence and comparing different translations of the source text,it proposes two strategies to achieve textual coherence of the target text.Specifically,the target text can realize cohesion by maintaining,transforming or adding cohesion methods;coherence by changing information arrangement and logical structures,using similar subjects and correcting incoherent structures.This thesis aims to provide translators of similar texts with some useful tips and insights,so as to produce coherent and logical target texts.
