Contract is an agreement between parties that creates mutual obligations enforceable by law.To ensure such enforceability in contract translation, translators must ensure that the legal meanings behind the contract terms are transferred in an understandable and accurate manner. To that end, translators need to interpret the differences between different legal cultures and deal with the inequalities that exist when defining the meaning of legal words and phrases. This thesis focuses on C-E translation of three types of legal words and phrases: fuzzy words,semi-legal words and legal terms. The presence of fuzzy words in the original contracts might influence accuracy,so the contract translators need to choose between retaining or eliminating the fuzziness.Semi-legal words are transformed from everyday language and are given certain legal meanings with the development of law.Translators need to identify these legal meanings and express them in the target language. And to translate highly specialized legal terms, translators should master certain legal knowledge and deal with the near, partial and non-equivalence between legal terms under different legal systems. This thesis is a case study based on a finance lease agreement to propose measures in translating the aforesaid three types of words and phrases. For fuzzy words, this thesis highlights the necessity of literal translation and discusses circumstances where such fuzziness could be reduced. For semi-legal words, translators can utilize both internal and external contexts to determine their legal meanings and select terms with the same legal meanings in the target language. As for legal terms, translators can refer to relevant laws and parallel texts, compare similar concepts under two legal systems and choose their functional equivalents in the target language.
