In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter listens to and analyzes the speech, takes notes, and then delivers the meaning in another language.Note-taking can help interpreters convey more information accurately.Effective notes are conducive to storing information, conjuring up memories, and understanding the logic. If note-taking is highly effective,it can benefit the interpreters. But if not,it disrupts the interpreters as it takes up too much energy and interferes with the transcoding process, resulting in poor performance. This thesis takes the note-taking in the interpretation for the mock conference of the economic prospects in 2020 as an example, and looks into the problem of low effectiveness of note-taking in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting.Based on the research on the original speech, the interpretation, and the notes, after a review of related literature, the author defines the effectiveness of note-taking,summarizes causes for low effectiveness, and gives specific strategies to improve it.The author finds that low effectiveness of note-taking manifests itself in the form of missing or deviated contents, redundant information, and inexplicit logic, and puts forward coping strategies to render note-taking more efficient, including the balance of the distribution of attention, the establishment of a symbol system, and a clearer logical structure. It is hoped that through the analysis of low effectiveness of note-taking in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting, this thesis can offer guidance to improve the effectiveness of note-taking,leading to better interpretation.
