Exploring The Problem Of Inefficient Note-Taking In Chinese-english Consecutive Interpreting And Its Coping Strategies

Note-taking is an essential skill for interpreters to assist their memory during consecutive interpreting,and thus,the efficiency determines the quality of interpretation to a large extent,namely,the accuracy,completeness and fluency of the interpretation.Inefficient note-taking,far from helping interpreters to recall the content,will lead to poor performance as it takes up too much energy and interferes with the transcoding process.Therefore,improving note-taking is of great significance for every aspiring interpreter.This thesis took the mock conference of the 2016 National School of Development Policy Talk on Industrial Policy as an example,and looked into the problem of inefficient note-taking as well as the causes behind,after which the thesis proposed corresponding solutions.First,based on a review of related literature,the author summed up three criteria for measuring the efficiency of note-taking.Then,after a meticulous analysis of the notes taken by the author during the mock conference,it was found that inefficient note-taking had three manifestations,which were incomplete rendition of information on notes,poor readability of notes,and an unclear display of primary and secondary information on notes.The causes behind also varied,including unproper allocation of effort,inconsistency of symbols,poor layout of notes,redundancy of secondary information,etc.At last,the author also put forward targeted coping strategies to improve note-taking efficiency,such as better attention-sharing,screening out redundant information,highlighting the logic of the source speech,improving pre-interpretation preparation,etc.It is hoped that by exploring the problem of inefficient note-taking in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting and proposing corresponding solutions,this thesis can draw inspiration to other students to improve their note-taking via specific targeted training,which will in turn improve overall quality and efficiency of interpretation.
