Translation Strategy Of Psychological Terms

Modern Chinese psychology,a developing discipline in the humanities and social science field,has largely borrowed its basic theoretical framework from Western psychology.As international psychological communication is becoming more and more intensive,the translation of psychological text is essential for the development of Chinese psychology.Against this backdrop,the translation of psychological terminology is especially important as it exerts a direct impact on international psychological communication.This report is based on the English—Chinese translation of The Psychology of Gender written by psychologist Dr.Gary W.Wood.The focus of this report is the translation of psychological terms,which are automatically extracted by the terminology extraction tool and manually extracted by the translator.The terms are classified into two categories,that is,terms with a standard Chinese translation and terms without a standard or fixed Chinese translation.The report draws on Andrew Chesterman's norm theory and translation strategies to examine the translation of terms without a standard or fixed Chinese translation at the grammatical level,semantic level and pragmatic level and finds out how strategies of these three groups are applicable to the translation of the psychological terms of The Psychology of Gender.The major findings of the report are as follows:a)For terms without a standard or fixed translation,strategies at the grammatical level,semantic level and pragmatic level are employed in different cases and the major strategies include literal translation,loan,and visibility change.The choice of different strategies reflects that the translator acts to conform to certain norms.b)Loan and annotation might facilitate the standardization of newly coined gender-related terms.c)Chesterman's systematic translation strategies take emphasis away from limited traditional translation methods to a macro level,which provides a new perspective for translation of psychological terms,especially psychological terms of gender.
