Taking as an example the translation of Around the World in 80 Trees,a popular botany science book,this thesis explores the application of register theory to the Chinese translation of popular science text.According to register equivalence theory,translation is a process of analyzing the register of the source text,locating and presenting its equivalence in the target language.Based on the register analysis of the source text,this thesis discusses the application of register equivalence theory to the translation of textual components of distinguished register features,such as plant names,semi-tech terms,mood and figures of speech,revealing how different strategies are used to achieve translation equivalence of three register variables-field,tenor and mode.The thesis concludes that,at the level of field,translators are supposed to adopt equivalent plant names suitable for the field characterized by overall simple daily language,while identifying and translating a few semi-tech terms in the text that convey precise science knowledge,using strategies such as consulting specialized dictionaries,using parallel texts as a reference,and seeking advice from professionals;at the level of tenor,the strategies of adding modal words and extending the meaning of words can make the mood explicit;at the level of mode,literal translation and domestication strategies such as shifting,borrowing and free translation can help retain the conceptual and interpersonal meanings of figures of speech to the greatest extent.The thesis thus concludes that the translation principle of register equivalence can guide the translators of popular science texts to pay more attention to their register variables that are different from specialized science texts,and thus ensure the faithfulness of the target text to the source text at multiple situational levels.The thesis also summarizes practical experience dealing with translation problems related to specialized scientific knowledge and cultural background information in popularscience texts,which may be of reference value for other popular science translators.
