From the “Yan'an Period” to the “Seventeen Years Period”,intellectuals continued to accept ideological remoulding in consecutive movements, and gradually changed from “the leaders of common people” to “common socialist intellectuals”.Correspondingly, the intellectuals portrayed in the works of literature in this period were also increasingly close to the characters of workers, peasants and soldiers in terms of thought and emotion, and became spokespeople for the state and the collective. This type of works can be called the narrative of intellectuals' “workerization and peasantization”.These works are generally considered to display monotonous images of intellectuals and mainstream values, lacking the basic beauty and humanism of artistic works. However, deep into the texts, the images of intellectuals were still created in various ways.Specifically, the intellectuals continued to reflect on the mainstream ideology and values while opting for the path of “workerization and peasantization”,rebelling against the misfortune to be “marginal men”.In the works of literature, although intellectuals who were combined with workers, peasants, and soldiers were often marginalized, the real desire and rational thinking of the individuals were often presented among grand narratives. From the “Yan'an Period” to the “Seventeen Years Period”,the portrayals of intellectual characters often showed characteristics that they were not bounded in the mainstream narrative framework. Therefore, exploring the narrative of the “workerization and peasantization” of intellectuals deeply can help us better understand the relationship between intellectuals and the times, and the spiritual inheritance of intellectuals. The purpose of this article is to reorganize the era worth of the images of intellectuals. This thesis starts with the analysis of the images of intellectuals in specific contexts, and attempts to explore the life choice of intellectuals—to be the combination of intellectuals and workers, peasants and soldiers—from multiple aspects, pointing out the warm humanity and idea of enlightenment reflected from the images of intellectuals behind this choice, and the transcendental significance of the images of intellectuals' “workerization and peasantization” for the mainstream narrative norms. The main structure and contents of the thesis are as follows:The Introduction defines and interprets the main concepts and terminologies involved in this article(such as “intellectuals”,“intellectuals' workerization and peasantization”,and “intellectual subjectivity”),which are set to be the basic objects and domain of discourse of this article.Next, the research background and motivation of the thesis are briefly explained, and the significance and value of this thesis are pointed out. Finally, the existing relevant research results related to this topic are introduced accordingly, and the popular research perspectives are induced and summarized.Chapter 1 is to sort out the life trajectories and creation styles of the leading writers who participated in the revolutionary narrative during the “Yan'an Period” and the “Seventeen Years Period”,such as Ding Ling,Xiao Jun,Wang Meng,Zong Pu,etc.,in order to explain the “workerization and peasantization” of intellectuals in specific historical context. This chapter discusses the impact of the policy of “workerization and peasantization” on intellectual writers' life at that time from three aspects—the theoretical premise, process and results, and significance and impacts. In addition, this chapter will also start with the intellectuals' personal correspondence records, public speeches, interviews, etc.,to study the intellectuals' choices at the “crossroads” of life,in order to better understand the reasons why intellectuals chose the path of “workerization and peasantization”: Firstly,it was out of a firm belief in the Communist Party of China.Intellectuals recognized the sublimity and sacredness of the revolutionary cause, regarded their loyalty as the fundamental guarantee of the revolutionary cause, and overlapped their personal life choices with the direction of the party, such as Ding Ling and Yang Mo.Secondly,it was to realize the value of personal life.In the process of revolution, intellectuals were eager to maintain independent thinking and contribute their personal strength to the cause of the country and the nation, such as Wei Junyi,Fang Ji,etc.Chapter 2 is the main content of this article, taking the intellectuals' images as the main object of discussion. In the context of “workerization and peasantization” provided by the related works of literature, this chapter analyzes the worker-and-peasant-type intellectuals, the revolutionary-type intellectuals, and cadre-type intellectuals respectively, observing the intellectuals' adherence and transcendence from different aspects when they were faced with “workerization and peasantization”.The mainstream narrative norms required the creators to establish models of combining intellectuals with workers and peasants, but the psychological activities of intellectuals in the works comprehensively and rationally reflected on the tools of labor, the environment of revolution, and the life of individuals.Intellectuals were no longer satisfied with being a model in the combination of workers, peasants and soldiers, and yearned for a life with personality, warmth and respect.Chapter 3 summarizes the awakening of the self-power displayed by the intellectuals in the “workerization and peasantization”,pointing out that the “workerization and peasantization” narrative of the intellectuals also reflects the intellectuals' inheritance of humanistic spirit since the May 4th Movement.Although the intellectual subjects were repressed in the context of “ideological remoulding”,the traits of intellectuals were still maintained in the cracks of revolutionary narrative: they were full of self-confidence about intellect, personality independence and enlightenment ideals.Although these traits seem unremarkable today,in the age of literary and political “integration”,they were sparkling flames and inspiring voices, being the precious spiritual wealth of that generation. The last part is the conclusion, which sums up the full text of this thesis. This part summarizes the transcendental significance of the narrative of intellectuals' “workerization and peasantization” in the revolutionary literature from the “Yan'an Period” to the “Seventeen Years Period”.It is pointed out that the adherence of intellectuals at the crossroads of their life is a precious embodiment of the spirit of “Human Literature” since the May 4th Movement.
