The Problems And Solutions In Simultaneous Interpreting

From July 5 to 7,2019,The Second IASS-AIS–NNU Advanced Semiotics Workshop was held on Suiyuan Campus of NNU.During the 3-day event,about 120 semiotics experts from world-renowned universities participated in the workshop.The reporter was honored to work in the simultaneous interpretation team for keynote speeches.Her job covered keynote speeches,introduction to speakers and the Q&A sessions.In the interpreting project,the reporter was faced mainly with three kinds of obstacles: lack of background knowledge,insufficient capability in coping with unexpected situations and inexperienced handling of idiom interpretation.The first was reflected in the unfamiliarity with the speaker's academic background and the unfamiliarity with terminology;the second was reflected in loss of logic in case of loosely structured source text and pauses along with loss of information in case of the speaker's quickening speech;the third was reflected in ineffective transfer of the intended meaning of idioms.Drawing upon previous research and professional interpreters,the reporter comes up with the following solutions based on the analysis of the transcripts from this interpreting project.Firstly,the reporter should prepare for background knowledge including the speaker's academic background and terminology.Secondly,to improve reaction to emergencies,the reporter ought to make logical analysis and use connectives to deal with the loosely structured source text,and relieve mental stress and focus on key words to deal with the speaker's quickening speech.Thirdly,the reporter can adopt the Interpretive Theory for idiom interpretation.Due to analysis of abundant transcripts,the paper not only is reflections of the reporter but also provides reference for simultaneous interpreters involved in academic conferences.
