The source text of this English-Chinese translation report is excerpted from a fantasy novel Ghosts of Tsavo. As the heroine of this novel who lives in the Victorian era,Beatrice Knight is equipped with supernatural abilities and is eager to unravel the mystery of ghosts of Tsavo after her arrival in the colonial Kenya with the Stewards. Both English and Chinese are typically unique in their word orders, sentence structures and other differences, and the translator can not just follow the principle of formal equivalence in the process of translation.Hence, the translator takes Functional Equivalence Theory as the guidance.“Functional Equivalence” includes lexical equivalence, syntactical equivalence, textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence.Focusing on lexical equivalence and syntactical equivalence, the translator analyzes cases to vindicate the feasibility of Functional Equivalence Theory and the practicability of some translation methods and techniques. In terms of the lexical equivalence, some Chinese four-character-structures and conversion are mentioned in the case study. As for the syntactical equivalence, the amplification, division and inversion are analyzed in some cases. This translation report consists of five chapters.Chapter One introduces the author and the content of the source text and the research significances of the translation practice.Chapter Two elaborates pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation works.Chapter Three illustrates Functional Equivalence Theory and the significance of the theory in the translation of novel.Chapter Four analyzes cases from the aspects of character images, psychological activities and dialogues in order to draw general conclusions.Chapter Five summarizes gains, limitations and inspirations of the translator.Through the translation practice and the elaborated analysis, the translator draws some conclusions as follows:(1)An appropriate parallel text should be selected as the reference of the translation practice;(2)The original meaning should be accurately conveyed and the images and emotions of the characters should be vividly presented;(3)The characteristics and the language habits of English and Chinese should be fully considered;(4)The cultural differences and the characteristics of the times should be emphasized;(5)The equivalence of response between the source and the target language readers should be achieved.
