This translation report is based on CINEMATIC APPEALS:The Experience of New Movie Technologies which was written by Ariel Rogers,an assistant professor in the Department of Film at Northwestern University. This report is also based on the English-Chinese translation of the introduction and the first chapter(excerpt)of the book, analyzing the translation problems and summarizing the translation experience in the process of its English-Chinese translation. The report is divided into four parts.Chapter one is about the basic situation and significance of this translation practice. The second part mainly introduces the process of English-Chinese translation containing the author's preparation before the translation, and author's efforts during and after the translation. The third part is a case study about the translation of English sentences under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory which is closely related to the translation strategies used by the author in the process of English-Chinese translation. The fourth part is a summary and reflection.Based on the understanding of the linguistic differences between Chinese and English, and guided by Nida's functional equivalence theory, the author tried to make the translation not only reflect the original meaning faithfully, but also be readable. The author realizes the importance of translation process, the application of translation methods and the summary and reflection of it through the practice of this translation project. Not only does the author need to fully understand the source text so as to be faithful to the original text, but also the author needs to make a good translation preparation before translation, including consulting the background of the author and the text, reading parallel texts, etc. Finally, the author also needs to summarize the whole translation process. What the author needs to summarize not only includes the successful translation experience, but also the deficiencies in the translation practice process.
