This translation-practice report selects Chapter six from Discourse and Knowledge: A Sociocognitive Approach as the translation task.Based on the theory of natural knowledge,the book discusses the epistemic processes,social distribution,cultural differences,and the“management” of language and discourse knowledge by interaction and communications in epistemic communities.Chapter Six,Discourse,knowledge and culture,focuses on the relationship between discourse,knowledge and culture.This chapter contains a large number of inanimate-subject sentences.Inanimate-subject sentences are widely used in English,but are relatively rare in Chinese,so they bring a lot of difficulties to translation.English and Chinese languages belong to different language families.Therefore,there are many differences between these two languages.What's more,language is also a symbolic feature that represents the thoughts,cultures,and regions of a nation.By comparing English and Chinese,the similarities and differences in syntax and grammar of them can be seen,which is helpful to translation.Therefore,from the perspective of English-Chinese comparison,this report discusses the translation of inanimate-subject sentences by means of combing with specific cases and summarizes three translation strategies.This report is divided into five chapters.The first two chapters of the report introduce the translation task and the translation processes.Chapter three makes a comparison between English and Chinese subjects,sentences,and thinking patterns.It finds that under the influence of objective thinking and abstract thinking,western nations are more inclined to use inanimate nouns as subjects to express objectivity.However,under the influence of subjective thinking and image thinking,Chinese nation tends to use animate nouns as subjects to express subjectivity.On this basis,Chapter four puts forward three translation strategies of inanimate subject sentences: replacing inanimate subjects,translating them into other sentence components and retaining inanimate subjects.The last chapter summarizes the translation practice,including findings and limitations.
