A Study on the Painting and Calligraphy Market during the Early Period of the Republic of China(1912-1937)is an academic work which gives a detailed introduction to the living conditions of calligraphers and painters and the trading characteristics of paintings and calligraphic works in the calligraphic and painting market from 1912 to 1937.The translation of academic works is of great significance to the “going global” of Chinese culture, the construction of China?s international academic discourse power, and the promotion of China's cultural soft power. With the increasingly frequent international academic exchanges, the rendering of academic works has become an effective way of cultural communication and knowledge brokering. However, owing to the characteristics of academic works and the differences between Chinese and English culture, the Chinese-English translation of academic works still faces some challenges.Based on the author?s translation of the Chapter Four and the excerpts of Chapter Five of the above mentioned book, this project report consists of five parts.Through addressing the important and difficult issues under the guidance of Skopos theory, the project is expected to contribute to the translation of academic works and the introduction of Chinese academic works to the world. This project aims at dealing with the difficulties of lexicon and syntax during translation. At the lexical level, the difficulties mainly focus on the translation of personal names, official titles, academic works and culture-loaded words, while, syntactically, the difficulty lies in the classical Chinese sentences and complex sentences. In the light of the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule of Skopos theory, the lexical difficulties are mainly solved by transliteration, free translation, amplification, explanation, annotation and correspondent method. As for syntactic difficulties, approaches are adopted including expansion, synthesization, conversion, reorganization, amplification, omission and so on.Through this project, the reporter had a deeper understanding of Skopos theory and summarized some translation strategies against difficulties in the translation of academic works,in order to make some contributions to the C-E translation of academic works in the future.
