A Project Report On The 2017 Victoria Jiangsu Business Placement Program

Victoria Jiangsu Business Placement(VJBP)program aims at strengthening the business communication between China and Victoria.The reporter provided interpreting services for Mrs.Katie Roffey,Vice Mayor of Wyndham,to facilitate her business visit to Nanjing Port(NJP),Hoperun Group and local federation of industry and commerce.This report analyzes the difficulties in the process of interpretation,and attempts to find out the causes and provides corresponding solutions for further improvement.The major difficulties encountered in the course of interpretation are:firstly,inadequate preparation due to the limited time;secondly,failure to apply interpreting strategies flexibly;thirdly,psychological pressure on the interpreter;and finally,great difficulties in figure interpretation.Based on the audio-recording transcripts of the project,related literature studies and the reflection of the reporter,the following four solutions were proposed.Firstly,the interpreter should prepare a relevant glossary and investigate the industry background,including the products and services of the company,and the industrial differences before interpretation.Secondly,the interpreter should give full play to subjectivity and make good use of interpreting strategies,namely,amplification,omission and adaptation according to the context.Thirdly,the interpreter needs to strengthen the psychological endurance and quality.Finally,it is necessary for the interpreter to increase the sensitivity toward number,and receive more number interpretation training combined with note-taking.It is hoped that the solutions proposed in this report will provide interpreting beginners with practical reference and enrich the research on interpretation.
