The young adults live alone in big cities are also referred to as “empty-nest youth”,which means the young people who work in big cities such as Beijing,Shanghai,Shenzhen,and Guangzhou,live alone or share room with others,but don’t have any intersection.They left home and their parents came to work in big cities,single or without a stable partner,no children.According to data released by Ali Data in May 2017,the “Guide to the Self-Test of Empty-Nest Youth” shows that there are 50 million empty-nest youths in China network.Young adults who are living alone have become a growing group of Chinese society and have research value.This paper first surveys the status quo of online social network activities of young adults live alone through questionnaires,including social networking objects,social content,social motivation,social channels,etc.,and applies the strong and weak ties theory of “social networking” to analyze whether urban young adults have online social relationships change after living alone.In addition,using the UCLA Loneliness Scale to examine the loneliness of young adults live alone in the online social environment.Lastly,the hyperpersonal model theory was applied to explain the satisfaction degree of social network activities of young adults live alone compared with face-to-face social networking.At the same time,through the interview method,we have in-depth and supplemented the understanding of young adults live alone in big cities on weather the online social network activities can contribute to decrese loneliness,face-to-face social activities and online social network activities which one is better.The study found that the strong and weak ties of young adults live alone has changed after living alone in big cities,showed that strong ties weakened and weak ties became stronger;Under the conditions of social networking,the loneliness of most young people live alone is still very strong.Social networking is not helpful to alleviate the loneliness of young people who live alone in urban areas.Young single dwellers recognized the advantages of online social networking in the four aspects of message sending,communication channels,message reception,and social feedback,but they also believe that the satisfaction of face-to-face social networking is higher than Social networking satisfaction.
