After the early years of World War ?,in order to fight against the Soviet union's power in Asia, the U.S.government turned the Okinawa islands into its most important military base in the Western Pacific. It also firmly grasped the control of the Okinawa islands through "International Trust".However, with the changes of the international environment, the growing of Japan and the resistance of Okinawa people, the U.S government began to lose control of Okinawa, and finally made a compromise to "return"the Okinawa's executive power to Japan.Through the study of the formation and development of the policy "returning Okinawa" of American Government from 1949 to 1972,we can find that the position of the U.S.government on Okinawa is based on its national interests and its own global strategy in the postwar periods. The returning of Okinawa administrative power shows the compromise between U.S and Japan under the east Asian situation in different periods. The Okinawa issue has become a lever of U.S-Japan relations and an important weight for the U.S to maintain the strategic balance in east Asia.
