As the public pays more attention to environmental protection, more and more construction companies are beginning to manage their construction activities.Today, construction companies are now facing increasingly stringent government regulations.Due to these growing pressures, many company leaders have begun to adopt green environmental policies and practices.Corporate green policies are becoming more common as they often require tendering and other policy documents such as equal opportunities, health and safety, and corporate social responsibility. As corporate green policies need to take steps to improve environmental performance, the Chinese government has developed policies and standards for green demand in the construction industry to protect the environment, including internal pollution control and building materials quality.Research on factors affecting environmental performance has focused on both internal and external aspects.External perspectives focus on the impact of external pressures on environmental performance in two ways: institutional pressures and stakeholders. The internal perspective focuses on three aspects of internal pressure, including the basic characteristics of the organization, the factors at the individual and team levels, and the strategic direction and behavior of the organization. But they rarely study how government regulations and corporate green policies affect environmental performance. The question we are trying to answer is: Are government regulations and corporate green policies having the same environmental impacts as other factors?Based on institutional theory,we have established a conceptual model of the relationship between government regulations, corporate green policies and environmental performance.Using questionnaires,we collected 268 valid questionnaires from Taiyuan construction enterprises in Shanxi Province, and verified the hypotheses in the conceptual model through structural equation modeling.A research model with 4 hypotheses was proposed to determine the associations between the variables of interest.By introducing the mediating variable of corporate green policies, the article breaks through the previous studies of direct relationship between government regulations and environmental performance. From the empirical results,we have found that,(1)Government regulations contribute significantly to increasing the effectiveness elaboration of corporate green policies.(2)Corporate green policies have a strong influence on environmental performance. The findings exemplify the theory that companies adopting corporate green policies are more susceptible to have a successful environmental performance.(3)Corporate green policies may serve as a full mediator between government regulations and environmental performance, which means that government regulations only have an indirect impact on environmental performance. This research may not only provide a systematic way to analyze the effects of corporate green policies also suggest the best means for companies to improve environmental performance.
