Research On The Spatial Defense Mode Of The University Campus

Campus' security is related to the function of universities and stability of the society.With the development of the era,the society puts forward new expectations for the functions of universities,while the negative effects of campus' s walls gradually emerged.The arguments about whether to leave or keep walls are increasing,which shows the conflict between the two needs of university security and functions to society.As one building with effect of spatial defense,walls are widely used in Chinese traditional architecture.From the original settlement,traditional folk and modern unit compound,to the ancient city,the Great Wall,walls are widely used.The walls' defensible function should not be ignored,which has concepts about spatial defense,including access control for security,declaration of field's safety security and building illicit close campus.They are passing on the contents of the safety design in traditional architectural culture in China.Nowadays,the university campus' s walls appear disharmonious gradually with the era,including increasing the "cities' diseases",hindering sharing resources,increasing construction costs,resulting in social differentiation and so on.There are also many disadvantages in defense,including making internal people lose vigilance,forming a spatial blind area easily,hiding in "hidden cases" easily,making defensible units "islanding" and "giant".The main reason is that the concept about walls' defense relies too much on the wall as a tool in its application.Therefore,we should find an alternative defensible tool,inherit the traditional concept about spatial defense,and learn from advanced experience to reshape the model of spatial defense from the aspects of direction guidance,subject' construction,object' transformation and operation strategy.Firstly,we should ensure the concepts and the right direction of the reshaping,including flexible use of enclosures,miniaturization of defensible units,making campus layout being “overall opening,partial closure”,and better defensible strategies,to set up perfect defensible space.But we should be concerned about universities' properties and other factors to eliminate ones who are inappropriate to reshape the model.Secondly,we should establish the campus defensible community and integrate the campus' defensible space into the overall environment of public security prevention and control.The government,society,community,school and other forces should participate together and form the overall public security culture.Thirdly,we should reconstruct the campus space,change the excessive dependence on the walls,replace the walls with the enclosures and form the spatial layout of "overall opening,partial closure and internal enclosure",so as to achieve the balance between demands.Finally,specific operational strategies such as natural monitoring,strengthening the territoriality,and transforming the transition space should be flexibly applied to eliminate the spatial blind area and form a three-dimensional,multi-level and non-blind-area campus's defensible space.
