Since China entered the aging society at the end of the 20 th century, the number of demented old people has increased substantially. The long-term care of demented elderly people has become an important social problem that needs to be solved urgently. At present, there are more than 40 million demented elderly people in China, which will reach 47 million in 2020.By 2053,the total population of demented people in China will exceed 100 million. The "Healthy China 2030" planning outline points out that it is necessary to "cover the entire life cycle and comprehensively safeguard people's health." It is one of the important contents of the national development strategy of “Healthy China 2030” to let the demented old people get the long-term care they deserve at the end of their lives, improve the quality of life of the demented old people, and maintain the dignity of the demented old people. This study combs the basic concepts and theories of dementia and long-term care, summarizes the current development of the long-term care reform and the exploration and practice of typical cities in China, and conducts an in-depth study of the R nursing institution in Nantong City,Jiangsu Province. The current situation of the long-term care service for the demented elderly in this institution is analyzed, and the problems and causes of the long-term care service of the demented elderly are analyzed. At present, some cities in China are actively exploring long-term care services for demented elderly people. This paper finds that the status quo of long-term care service system is still in the initial stage of the construction of long-term care service system. The relevant policy documents for care services have not yet been introduced. There are many difficulties in the long-term care of demented elderly people:(1)the standard of recognition of long-term care service targets for demented elderly people is vague,(2)the professionalism of service providers and the pertinence of service content and methods.Poor,(3)The long-term care service level and service standards of the demented elderly are not clear,(4)the quality supervision and management of the demented is not in place, and the demented elderly generally lack the high-quality long-term care services required. The main reasons for these problems are:(1)the public's low awareness of the disability of the elderly with dementia,(2)the lack of quality certification and training for demented elderly care,and(3)the lack of industry standards for long-term care services for demented elderly people.(4)The service quality supervision and management evaluation system is not perfect.Based on the above research results and drawing on the successful experience of developed countries, this study proposes policy recommendations to promote the development of long-term care services for demented elderly in China:(1)developing human resources for long-term care services for demented elderly,and(2)vigorously developing dementia-related Knowledge science,(3)setting up an independent policy for long-term care for demented elderly,(4)setting industry standards for long-term care services for demented elderly,and(5)establishing a long-term care service supervision and evaluation system for demented elderly.
