Taking economic means as the main tool for mainland's work towards Taiwan is the mainstream view of domestic academic circles. However,‘Chinese identity' crisis in Taiwan society has not been reversed in line with the trend of peaceful development of cross-strait relations, especially ‘Taiwanese identity' of the youth generation who live in the transition period of Taiwan's society has risen sharply.Overseas students from Taiwan are selected as the target group.Considering that they are studying abroad during the critical period in their life when political attitudes and values come into being, thus their national identity may be more plastic.Second,as an elite group among Taiwanese youth, they will play an important role in the future development of cross-strait relations, but the relevant research results are scarce.Based on the political socialization theory and the national identity crisis theory, this study will examine the characteristics and trends of the “national identity” transformation of Taiwanese students on the basis of examining some key nodes in the history of Taiwan's study abroad. Also, the current status of the ‘national identity' of the international student group in Taiwan is empirically analyzed based on questionnaires and interviews. The study found that after the People's Republic of China monopolized the representation of ‘China' and triggered the legitimacy crisis of the “Republic of China”,the group of foreign students studying in Taiwan on the front line of international exchange faces the predicament of identity and increasingly regards themselves as "Taiwanese." The "Taiwanese identity" of the target group has a certain crisis objectively, but it cannot be effectively converted into "national identity" based on specific culture and ethnic identity. We still need to be alert to the use of these false "public opinion bases" by Taiwan independence elements to incite the Taiwanese students to take the "anti-China" line.In the future,we should put more emphasis on the culture and ethnicity of "China",encourage more Taiwanese students to take root in the mainland, and create conditions for reshaping "Chinese identity" on the basis of "double recognition."...
