In recent years, the populist trend of thought has sprung up in western countries, and then it has exerted a great influence on the political life, political party system and social stability of western countries, and even it has launched an impact on the global order. This populist trend of thought is quite different from the early populism. Its connotation scope, manifestation and target orientation all present different characteristics from the early populism.A comprehensive and in-depth study of the connotation, characteristics, practical performance and influence of contemporary populism is of great practical significance for understanding and mastering the new changes and trends of contemporary capitalism. It should be noted that early populism appeared in the middle and late19 th century, and its ideological tradition mainly came from Rousseau's idea of people's sovereignty and freedom and equality. At that time,Russian populism and American "People's Party" populism were most typical. The populist movements in these two countries have both failed and ended. After a long period of low ebb and flow, populism, although occasionally rising, has not caused a wide range of impacts.Until the outbreak of the global financial crisis in 2008,populist thoughts rose strongly in western countries with serious financial crisis sequelae.Trump's election as President of the United States, the Brexit incident in Britain and the rise of populist parties in various European countries are practical manifestations of the rise of contemporary western populist trends. The contemporary western populist trend of thought continues the characteristics of the early populism of "populism","grassroots","anti-elite" and "anti-aristocracy",and is endowed with new characteristics under the new era background.Among them, the most striking characteristics are anti-representative system,anti-establishment,anti-immigrant refugees,anti-globalization and pluralism, and entering the mainstream system with the new power of political parties. In addition,we also need to know that the rise of contemporary western populism has its profound political, economic and social roots. The defects and dilemmas of western representative democracy system are the political root of the rise of contemporary western populism. The dilemma of economic system in the transitional period is the economic root of the rise of contemporary western populism.Social differentiation in western countries is the social root of the rise of contemporary western populism. The rise of contemporary western populism is also caused by the political, economic and social difficulties under the western system, and it is also the periodic concentrated outbreak of the internal contradictions of capitalism in western developed countries. In other words, its essence is the failure of the western institutional model under the condition that the basic contradiction of capitalism cannot be completely eradicated.Of course, the rise of contemporary western populism has a great impact on the people in western countries. In addition,it even affects the superstructure of western countries and the international order. This trend of thought has provoked extreme nationalism and xenophobia, reduced the effectiveness of western democratic systems, intensified social conflicts, increased social instability, impacted the international order and hindered the process of globalization. From the perspective of the future trend, the populist trend of thought cannot completely disappear in the future period, and even a new upsurge may be set off in the near future due to major outstanding events. At present, populist thoughts are spreading in western countries. Its rise and strong performance in western countries are likely to promote the chain effect of populist thoughts in other countries(regions),thus showing a trend of development and growth.
