In the context of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union,China made three critical diplomatic choices between the United States and the Soviet Union from 1949 to 1982.The Sino-Soviet alliance started in 1950 and broke down in 1962.In 1979,China and the United States established diplomatic relations. Both the Sino-Soviet relationship and the Sino-US relationship have undergone tremendous changes. The academic community has done a lot of research on these diplomatic choices, but none of them has unified the three cases in a same theoretical context. In the perspective of realism in international relations, this paper constructs the concept of "national autonomy" by means of interpretation. From the perspective of national autonomy, through a detailed analysis of the three historical periods,it shows how China's pursuit of national autonomy guides its diplomatic choice between the United States and the Soviet Union.
